HISTORY OF THE HICKMAN COUNTY BAND PROGRAM

The "Little Million Dollar Band"

In August 1955, the Hickman County Band was organized by Mr. & Mrs. Herbert A. Guy. Before they married, each of them had been band directors - so when Hickman County hired Mr. Guy as the band director, they got two for the price of one. Within four months they played their first Christmas Concert with sixty-five members in the concert band. Only 4 students had played an instrument before the band was organized (two cornets, one clarinet, and one French horn).

That spring on April 26th and 27th, 1956, the band from Centerville went to Peabody College for their first Concert Competition Festival sponsored by the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association. This was the organization's 17th competition festival. Of the  31 bands in the contest, Centerville was one of only four bands winning the Superior "A" rating, and only one of three bands to earn a Superior "A" rating for sight reading that year.

The next fall on October 18, 1956 the "Little Million Dollar Band," as most people had tagged them, marched and performed with 65 members at the ball game with a fantastic show wearing their new uniforms. "Pappy & Mammy" Guy, as they were fondly known by their students, had a seventeen straight year record of Superior "A" ratings at contests in Middle Tennessee. They believed in each student giving their best and putting their best foot forward. For the inaugural year of the Hickman County Marching Classic band contest the Grand Champion Trophy was named in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Guy.
